ACTAN

Association for Care Training & Assessment Networks - National Organisation representing health & social sector training, education & development in England/Scotland and Wales.

AQAA

ARC

Association for real change - Membership organisation which supports providers of services to people with a learning disability.

CIS

The Common Induction Standards are designed for people entering social care, and those changing roles or employers within adult social care.

CQC

The Care Quality Commission will regulate and improve the quality of health and social care and look after the interests of people detained under the Mental Health Act. CSCI no longer exists, see CQC.

CSCI

Commission for Social Care Inspection - Independent Inspectorate for all social care services in England. Now known as CQC (Care Quality Commission)

GSCC

General Social Care Council - The regulatory body for the social care workforce in England.

InLAWS

Integrated Local Area Workforce Strategy - Integrated local area workforce strategies - InLAWS is a Skills for Care and ADASS project established in 2009 with support from the Department of Health (DH) and other delivery partners.

LDQ

Learning Disabilities Qualification - A related vocational qualification for people working in the learning disabilities service that replaced the LDAF.

National Occupational Standards - NOS describe best practice by bringing together skills, knowledge and values.

NTOW

New Types of Worker - The New Types of Worker Programme commenced in 2003 and aimed to encourage a strategic approach to workforce development and a more integrated approach to service delivery

NVQ

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are vocational awards in England and Wales that are achieved through assessment and training. These have now been replaced by the QCF.

PCT

Primary care trust - Manage all local health/primary care services. Work with LA and other agencies to make sure that local community’s needs are being met.

POVA

Protection of Vulnerable Adults - A pre-employment process – to ensure individuals with a track record of poor practice/or have harmed a vulnerable adult do not work in the care sector.

RMA

Registered Managers Award - Qualification for managers of a care setting. The Leadership and Management in Care Services is now a replacement for this qualification.

SCIE

Social Care Institute for excellence - An independent organisation that aims to raise standards of practice across the social care sector and to develop and promote knowledge about what works best in social care.

TSIF

Training Strategy Implementation Fund - Fund from Skills for Care (distributed by Care Learning) to help fund the costs of independent sector staff achieving NVQ’s in Care. See Funding section for more information.
