This prestigious South West Award is given by the South West Regional Committee of Skills for Care in memory of Ted Gully, the founder Chair of the Regional Committee, founder member of the Avon Care Sector Employers' Consortium (now Care Learning), Chair of the Avon Registered Care Homes Association and long time champion of raising standards in social care delivery.

The Award highlights the high standard of work carried out by those in a team leadership role and inspires achievement in care staff at all levels as well as promoting the social care sector in the South West.

The Ted Gully Award was first awarded in the West of England (old Avon area) in 2006 to Beth Hendry of Aspects & Milestones Trust. The judges were so impressed by the exemplary candidates and the demonstration of good practice that in 2007 Skills for Care South West made the Award region-wide. Mandy Langton of Care South became the first regional winner, followed in 2008 by Claire Kear of St George's Association, Cheltenham and Lorna Smith of Parkwood House, Plymouth in 2009

The 2010 Award

Nominations are invited for Managers or Team Leaders in a social care setting who have been in post for 18 months or less. The Award aims to highlight and recognise managers who have made a significant difference to and enhanced the quality of life of the people who use their care services, and who have inspired a better quality of care through the learning and development of the staff.

Nominations will be received by Skills for Care South West, and the shortlisted nominees will be invited to attend an interview with an informal regional panel.

The regional winner will receive a £1,000 travel bursary to enable them to look at models of care and support in other parts of the UK as well as abroad. The winner will be expected to write a report on the experience to be shared with the social care sector, including what the bursary was spent on, what was learnt and how this was transferred to practice. The winner will also be expected to give a presentation on their experience to the Skills for Care South West Regional Committee.

Two additional finalists will receive an award to the value of £500 each for personal learning and development, and will be expected to write a report on what the award was spent on, what was learned and how it was transferred to practice.

The Awards will be announced and presented at the next Skills for Care Regional Conference in November.

Nominations

Nominations for a Manager or Team Leader can be received from colleagues, proprietors, people who use services, training providers, care managers or from nominees themselves. The nominee must be employed in a care setting in the South West region, and have been in post for 18 months or less.

Nominees must be at a relevant senior level (e.g. minimum NVQ 4). A judging panel made up of representatives from the Skills for Care South West Regional Committee will short list the nominees. If short-listed for an informal interview, nominees will be asked questions which may include discussing any work, projects or initiatives in which they have been involved and which demonstrate their managerial ability. They will also be asked to describe how they would use the £1,000 bursary or £500 award for personal learning and development if they were successful.

The nomination will require a completed nomination form attached. Nomination forms will not be accepted if sent electronically.

A hard copy of the nomination form with the nominee's manager's signature must be sent to the address below by the deadline. Any nominations received after the stated deadline will not be included in the process.

The process will be managed by Skills for Care South West.
